Chapter 900:
Melba shuffled over to check. “Who's there? It’s awfully early...”
Her tone then brightened with surprise. “Mr. Flynn! It’s you.”
“Yes,” Eric replied, standing in the doorway with a bag from Grandma's Kitchen in hand, a faint smile on his face.
“I made a promise to Joy yesterday.”
“What's that?” Melba asked, clearly out of the loop about the day before.
“You're here!”
A little blur darted from the bedroom, barreling toward the door. Eric crouched down, scooping Joy up with one
arm.
“Good morning, Joy,” he said warmly, lifting the bag. “I brought you sbread.”
“Yay!” Joy's face lit up with glee. “Thank you!”
Melba laughed. “Did you steal my phone to call Mr. Flynn yesterday, Joy?”
“I didn’t steal,” Joy protested, all seriousness. “I missed Mr. Flynn, and he told| could call if | missed him.”
She hugged his neck and turned to him for backup. “Right?”

“Exactly,” Eric confirmed with a grin, passing the bag to Melba. “She mentioned wanting bread, so | picked some
up from Grandma's Kitchen.”
“Goodness,” Melba said, taking the bag. “That place is famous around Srixby.”
Just then, Hadley emerged from washing up.
“Hadley, Mr. Flynn's here,” Melba announced with a smile, aware they'd crossed paths before but privy to little
else.
“Morning,” Hadley said, offering Eric a polite, restrained smile.
“Morning,” he echoed, meeting her eyes and recalling his commitment. He tried to ease Joy down. “Joy, | need to
head out now. Enjoy breakfast with your mom.”

“Nooo!” Joy clung tighter. “Stay, please!”
Eric paused, glancing at Hadley for guidance.
“Joy,” Hadley said, her brow creasing faintly. “Mr. Flynn has things to do. He can’t stay.”
“Really?” Joy's wide, pleading eyes turned to Eric. “You don’t have time? Not even for breakfast with me?”
How could he say no to that?
“Joy,” Hadley interjected, sensing the tide turning against her. “Our food might not be to his liking.”
“Is that right?” Melba jumped in.
“Mr. Flynn, I've got oatmeal with pumpkin chunks, hard-boiled eggs, toast, sausages, and bacon. Anything catch
your fancy? If not, there's the bread you brought.”
Hadley sighed inwardly—did no one have her back?
Eric let out a soft chuckle. “I'm fine with anything, but...” He trailed off, looking to Hadley again.
“Hadley?” Melba prompted, reading
