Sophia cracked a smile too, aware that he was using this moment to express the disappointment in his heart.
For a sec, she didn't know how to respond, just like when Kent greeted her with a "Wee home." Maybe it was the lost memories that made everything feel so alien to her. Even though they gave her a sense of warmth, she just couldn't conjure up that feeling of belonging you get when you find your way home.
This truth sent a wave of panic through her.
She had no clue what kind of person she used to be. Why, even when this man claiming to be her husband tells her they're married and that he loves her, she couldn't feel that sense of finding her kin.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtShe'd even otten her kid.
Such a little one, still in desperate need of her mom, and yet she'dpletely wiped her from her memory.
She feared that maybe it was her lack of affection for the child that led to this amnesia.
Oddly enough, unlike with Ivan, when he said they were boyfriend and girlfriend, she didn't doubt Brandon's word that they were husband and wife with a daughter. She just inexplicably believed him.
But even though she believed him, and felt warmth towards him, warmth wasn't closeness, trust wasn't dependence, and she just couldn't muster up any more emotion than that.
Brandon knew it too.
He responded with a faint smile and then fell silent.
His phone rang just then.
As the screen lit up with an iing call, Sophia happened to glance at his lock screen wallpaper and her eyes welled up with tears-just like that.
Brandon turned to her just in time, his expression shifting slightly: "What's wrong?" "It's... it's nothing," Sophia stammered, shaking her head in a fluster, not wanting Brandon to see her in such a mess, so she instinctively made a dash for it. "I just need to hit the restroom." She hurriedly scrambled out of bed, and as Brandon reached out to steady her, she had already sidestepped and bolted toward the door, yanking it open and sprinting down the hallway towards the restroom at the end, pletely etting there was one in her room.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmBrandon's frown deepened as he quickly followed her out the door, catching up to her in the hallway and grabbing her arm. "I'm really okay." Sophia's voice was still shaky, but she was desperately trying to keep her emotions in check. She didn't look at him, just murmured, "I just need to go to the restroom." After saying that, she wrenched her hand free from his grasp.
This time, Brandon didn't stop her. He simply said in a gentle tone, "Alright, I'll wait for you outside." "Mhm." Sophia gave a small nod and walked towards the restroom, her mind replaying the image of the little gir on Brandon's phone wallpaper-a girl looking up at the sky, her face barely seen in profile. But in that instant, she was overwhelmed by a flood of heartache and guilt. As Brandon watched her disappear into the restroom, he finally looked down at his phone and pressed gently on the screen to reveal a picture of Theresa.
He stared thoughtfully at the photo for a moment, thiped the screen back to the hpage, where an unmissed call notification appeared against a background image of Sophia. It was the sas the one they had at home, her professional photo.
Brandon looked at the photo for a while, then touched the missed call, which was from Kent.
Just as he was about to call back, Kent's unexpected voice cfrom the men's restroom entrance: "Mr. Crawley? What are you doing here?" Brandon looked up to see him tossing a paper towel into the bin and walking over with an air of victory, saying cheerily, "Susan's brought Theresa over. I just picked them up and was about to call to see if I shoulde up to you guys, but the little one needed the restroom, so Susan took her first." He glanced back towards the women's restroom next door, "Guess they're still inside. Should be out any minute." Brandon just stared.
He asked Kent, "You mean Theresa's in the restroom too?" Kent was a bit baffled by that "too," but still nodded, "Yeah, what's up?" But before he could get an answer, Brandon had pushed past him and was dashing towards the women's restroom. Kent was left behind, thoroughly confused.
